BUiD’s Professor Participates in Ajman 5th International Environment Conference

Wednesday, March 7, 2018

On 7 March 2018, Dr Kirk Shanks, Assistant Professor of Building Services Engineering, presented two research papers at the Ajman 5th International Environment Conference (AIEC2018), which was held at Ajman University.

In his first paper, “Energy performance resilience of UAE buildings to climate change”, Dr. Shanks presented a study of how the climatic drivers of cooling energy demand change under a ‘business-as-usual’ scenario of climate change. In this study, the comparative effect of climate changes on the fundamental heat gain paths were examined and discussed to identify the most effective solutions for improving energy performance resilience to future climate change in the UAE.

In the second paper, which he co-authored, he talked about the “Impact of Double Skin Facades on Cooling Demand in High Rise UAE Buildings”. This study investigated how the performance of the double skin façade concept was affected by the materials used to construct the outer skin.

The AIEC2018 focused on the Climate Change Challenges and Adaption.it presented a platform for experts to discuss current or future research on green practices, eco-efficient technologies, managing the carbon footprint, and supporting the expansion of environmentally friendly and sustainable initiatives.
