The British University in Dubai Supports the UAE’s Workforce for the Green Economy with Highly Skilled Graduates

Prof. Bassam Abu Hijleh, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and IT at BUiD, participated in the Green Leadership Series on 3 October 2017, which was organised by Dubai Science Park under the theme ‘Transitioning towards a Green Economy: Attracting and developing the talent for a sustainable future”

Prof. Bassam was a panel member in a discussion about “Priming the Workforce for the Green Economy “. IRENA predicts 90,000 green jobs in the UAE by 2030 , so the panel discussed, the:

  • challenges and needs of large employers in sourcing trained staff
  • Best practice lessons in sourcing a global workforce from leading TNCs
  • What universities can do in structuring relevant courses
  • The role played by specialist training institutions
  • The aspirations and experience of students in the green workforce

Prof. Bassam stressed the University’s lead in the area of sustainability as it offers programmes at the masters and doctoral level in Sustainable Design and Energy Management and how the University is supporting the UAE’s workforce with highly capable and skilled graduates.  In Addition, the University has close relation with relevant industries through its advisory boards for the programmes and the research done in collaboration with such industries. BUiD also provides a range of professional training workshops leading to international professional certifications, e.g. LEED, CEM and CEA.
