The British University in Dubai celebrates its biggest cohort ever of graduates with 30 PhD Holders and 215 Master Graduates

Under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Ahmad bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, CEO and Chairman of the Emirates Group, and Chancellor of The British University in Dubai, the University celebrated on Wednesday, December 13, 2017, the graduation of 30 PhD holders and 215 Master graduates. The ceremony was held in the Cultural and Scientific Association in Al Mamzar- Dubai. This cohort of graduates is considered the biggest in the history of the University regarding numbers and programmes, as this year witnessed the graduation of its first batch of PhD’s in Computer science and Business Management, as well as graduates in Masters in Education, Project Management and Law. It was a remarkable ceremony for the graduating batch of 2017, as it was for the first time that BUiD Graduates received Smart Certificates based on the Blockchain technology, making them the first in the country and third in the world to earn such degrees.

The ceremony commenced with the UAE National Anthem and recitation from the Holy Quran. Prof Abdullah Alshamsi, Vice- Chancellor of the University welcomed the guests and made some significant announcement about the launch of BUiD’s Dubai Centre for Risk and Innovation and the plans to broaden BUiD’s portfolio of programmes by the introduction of UG programmes in areas such as Engineering, Business and IT. HH Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chancellor of BUiD Conferred the degrees to the Graduates, he was joined on stage with Prof Abdullah Alshamsi,Vice-Chancellor, Prof Eman Gaad , Dean of Faculty of Education, Prof Ashly Pinnington, Dean of Research,Prof Bassam Abu Hijleh, Dean of Faculty of Engineering and IT and the rest of BUiD Academic staff. More than five hundred people including the Graduates, their families, senior dignitaries from the Government and Private sector, attended the Ceremony.

The British University in Dubai was established by a Dubai government decree in 2003 to be the first postgraduate university in the region and has been operating ever since in collaboration with leading UK universities such as the University of Manchester, University of Edinburgh, University of Glasgow, and Cardiff University. Dr Richard Kirkham, Senior Lecturer, School of MACE, University of Manchester, delivered the keynote speech that highlighted the years of partnership the British University and the UK universities have built. Moreover, underlined the fact that the main aim of the University is to support scientific research in the UAE in collaboration with many governments and private organisations. Dr Juma Al Mazrouie, PhD PM Graduate addressed the congregation on behalf of BUiD Graduates. Mr Omar Al Qaryouti, Graduate of MSc Informatics and Farah Al-ameen Graduate of MSc Sustainable Design of the Built Environment, was awarded the best ‘BUiD Graduate of 2016-2017’ by Dubai International Academic City. As a standard part of the ceremony, BUiD recognises the contribution of organisations towards supporting research, scholarship, learning and teaching at BUiD. This year the recognition trophy was awarded to ICT Fund, H.E. Mr Majed Almesmar, Chairman of the Broad of trustees, collected the trophy on behalf of ICT Fund.

The evening ended on a very high note, with Graduates receiving small gifts from BUiD and congratulatory notes, flowers from their near and dear ones. And some graduates arranged for a Palestinian dance troop to perform for heroes of the evening, joining in their celebration.
