Short Bio

Dr. Riad Saraiji has a PhD in Architectural Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University, USA. He is a former faculty member of two of the top 20 Engineering universities in USA; Penn State University and the University of Maryland USA. From 1997 to 2006 he was president and CEO of Illumitech, LLC,  Virginia, USA.  In 2006 he joined the faculty of Architectural Engineering at United Arab Emirates and in 2014 he was appointed as the department head leading over 25 faculty and staff, 200 undergraduate students, and 18 graduate students. As the department head, he played an instrumental role in the successful accreditation of the department by ABET.  Dr. Saraiji has 4 US patents  and two international patents which are owned by Carrier Refrigeration.  He has over 20 peer reviewed publications.   Dr. Saraiji received many funded projects from international organizations such as: NASA, National Science Foundation, iGuzzini, Osram, NRF, Exxon Mobile, GASCO, Emirates Foundation.  He designed the lighting of several iconic buildings in the region some of  which were shortlisted for LDA Award (London), and Middle East Lighting Design Award.  He is the recipient of RTA DAST award and was nominated for PLDA educator award (Rome).  During his PhD studies at Penn State he received funding from NASA to investigate the use of sunlighting for Human Habitation of Space.
